TAXATION INCREASES

HAWKE S BAY PROTEST OTHER METHODS SUGGESTED That the Budget deficit should ba overcome by a reduction in the cost of the civil service, and that if taxation is necessary the burden shouold be placed on foreign imports, were recommendations to the Government decided on yesterday by Hawke’s Bay businessmen. [ Per Press Association. ) NAPIER, Aug. 6. The Budget taxation proposals were s severely attacked at a conference today of the Napier Chamber of Commerce and the Hawke’s Bay Employers’ Association, who resolved: “That in view of the high cost of administering the county wo strongly urge the Government to reduce the cost of such administration, rather than increase taxation (the incidence may with advantage be varied) more especially within the civil service itself, as we are informed by officers of this service that considerable economy can be effected.” The conference further resolved: “That it be a recommendation to the Government that the primage duty on imported goods, instead of being increased to two per cent., be abolished, as the primage duty was originally imposed as a war measure only, and that if extra taxation is necessary a further tax of five per cent, on all foreign importations to New Zealand be favoured, thus assisting the British Empire.”
