HOLLYWOOD IN PANIC

INFLUENCE OF “TALKIE FILM” “Many stars are spending thousands of dollars on voice production—Holly wood is in a panic.” The change that the advent of the “talkie” film is likely to bring in the motion picture industry, particularly to many stars, is the current chatter at Hollywood, acording to Mr Martin V. Merle, American playwright and scenario manufacturer, who arrived in Auckland recently. “The ‘talkie’ will take five years to perfect,” said Mr Merle, “but it is going to cause a reconstruction of the whole motion picture industry. Nine stars out of ten are stars just because they can ‘register’ and photo-graph well. The time is coming, though, when the whole cast will have to be vocally perfect as well as good photographic subjects.”
