ROWING
THE LIGHT BLUES UNION BOAT CLUB CREW. PREPARING FOR HENLEY-ON-YARRA. In view of the fact that the Henlcy-on-Yarra regatta will take place on October 27, just three weeks from today, a great deal of interest is being displayed by rowing enthusiasts in the form of the Union Boat Club crew, holders of the champion fours title 4 in the Dominion. These* oarsmen will make the trip to Melbourne to represent New Zealand at the big regatta, where the cream of Australia’s rowing talent will be in evidence. Seen out on the river last evening the blues rowed in impressive style, with the boat carrying on well between the strokes, and it is evident that they have been painstaking in their efforts to get into condition and eliminate any faults of style. Himself the winner of several fouroar and double scull events, their coach, Mr Wally Sharpe is emphatically of the opinion that the crew will fully uphold the reputation of the Dominion against the best of any Australian club, and in this view he is supported by many other proved performThe boat in which the light blues will oppose the Australian cracks in the Stewards’ Callenge Cup at Henley-on-Yarra was sent to Wellington during the week and will be taken to Melbourne on the Manuka, which vessel leaves for the Victorian capital to-day. Meanwhile the crew will use a boat provided by the Aramoho Boat Club. It is interesting to compare the following figures with regard to the chosen four:—
At one stage in the campaign for funds to finance the trip it was thought that sufficient might be available to permit of the sending of a single sculler and it was naturally considered that A. K. G. Jackson, the New Zealand title-holder, would be the one to go. However, it has been decided that Jackson’s trip will not eventuate this month, but a special effort will be made to permit him to travel to Sydney later in the year to compete at the New South Wales championships. It is felt that this arrangement will be greatly in Jackson’s favour as the course over which the New South Wales sculling championship will be contested is three miles, while the event at Hcnley-on-Yarra extends to a mile. As staying is Jackson’s forte, the New South Wales event should suit him best.
It appears certain that the doings of the light blue crow ■will be followed *i with interest during the coming week,
