THE TURF

AUCKLAND SPRING MEETING TO OPEN FINE FIELDS ENGAGED AT ELLERSLIE TO-DAY KE VIEW AND PROSPECTS By “Kestrel.” The first really metropolitan fixture in the spring racing campaign in the Dominion is the Auckland Racing Club’s spring gathering, which will be commenced at Ellerslie to-day and will be concluded on Monday. Practically all the best handicap horses in the North Inland are engaged, and though the absence of the South Island contingent may be regretted, there is ample talent offering to provide close contests. Latest reports show that the track will be in great condition and some fine racing will be seen, espec tally in the Mitehelson Cup. Great Northern Guineas and Welcome Stakes, which promise to be well worth seeing. The first event, at 12 noon, will be the TRIAL HURDLE RACE •Of 400 Sovs; miles).

It appears certain that there will be & dozen starters and when they are summed up a decision may be made for Quincoma. Potoanui and Siaosi. The classic” event is the GREAT NORTHERN* GUINEAS (Of 1500 Sova; one mile) Cashier Avoncourt Grand Tea Gold Money High Falutin Episode Kinross Mithra Sir Russell Prodice Staghunter White Wings Te Atiawa Violation Toxeuma This is one of the best fields that has been engaged in this event and there should be some spirited betting, for several of the candidates will be well supported. Wanganui will have three representatives in Episode. Cashier and High Falutin’. In addition there are staghunter. Toxeuma, Te Atiawa, Gold Money, Mithra and Prodice. There is such a galaxy of three-year-olds that one is rather diffident about routining them to three but perhaps Cashier, Episode and Prodice may prove the best of the large, field. It is a high-class field that is carded fur the SHORTS HANDICAP (Of 500 Sovs; six furlongs)

Aussie has been sprinting brillantly of late and will take a power of beating. Commendation cannot be ready for some weeks yet, but Hoariri appears to be. well set to repeat Avondale form. Others that have good chances are Benzora, Kaiti, Freehold and Oration, but summing them up one cannot help being impressed by Aussie. Hoaxiri and Freehold. The best handicap class figures in the MITCHELSON CUP (Of 1500 Sovs; I*4 miles)

Star Stranger must be well cared for with his big impost when compared with Mask, who ran such a great race in the Eclipse Stakes at Wanganui. Twelve months ago Mask finished second to Te Monanui in the Mitehelson Cup and to-day he may go one better. Catkin and Valkon are considered to have a good chance to get in the money. Pakuranga Hunt Club form may throw some light on the HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE (Of 400 Sovs; about 2*4 miles)

Importer appears likely to be installed favourite and his most dangerous opponents would seem to be Pompeius and Master Arch. The juveniles will be seen out in the WELCOME STAKES (Of 1000 Sovs; fve furlongs) - enmony Clever First Money Eaglet Hunting Day < ioiden Measure Supremacy Carl Idra Early two year old form is often very deceptive as the youngsters are susceptible to a great deal of improvement at this stage of their careers. A good one has made his appearance in Supremacy, and the Chief Ruler colt may bq considered better than First Money and Hunting Day.

It is a large field that will contest the GORDON HANDICAP (Of 400 Sovs; one mile)

In such a crowd there is often one that stands out to he made the favourite on the basis of the old adage, “the greater the field the greater the moral.” Perhaps Storm Fiend may prove to be that one but he will have to maintain his best form to hold off Arikitoa and Modest Boy. The concluding event is the FLYING HANDICAP (Of 500 Sovs; seven furlongs)

There are some smart sprinters who can stay out the extra furlong, and among these a trio that may be considered to have good chances are Awarere, Thursby and Flying Juliet. AUCKLAND OPINION RIGHT FROM THE COURSE PROSPECTS AND SOME LIKELY CANDIDATES [ Per Press Association. I AUCKLAND, Oct. 5. Delightful summer weather continued to-day after light showers in the early morning and the going to-morrow for the opening of the Auckland spring meeting promises to be splendid. A start is to be made at 12.2 p.m. with the Trial Hurdles. Kawini would be a warm favourite with a popular jockey up but R. Olive docs not ride him well. Potoanui (J. Sharkey) has improved out of all knowledge of late weeks and is all the better for his successful venture at Avondale. He is to contest the Steeplechase on Monday and is sure to go well there too, one of his opponents being Handy, who gave a faultless exhibition over the hill yesterday morning. For the G.N. Guineas Early on the programme (at 12.47 p.m.) is the Great Northern Guineas,! which promises to furnish one of the best races ever staged in this classic. Opinion is largely divided between Episode (B. Morris), White Wings (S. Henderson), Toxeuma (A. Tinker), and Prodice (A. Ellis), and there should be some spirited betting between this quartette. In the event of rain Prodice will wind up a warm first fancy, but otherwise it is likely that Episode and White Wings will be in most demand.

An interesting field will be seen out in the Shorts Handicap (1.37 p.m.), the first leg of the double. Aussie is well but may need a race. Commendation looks a bit big but indications seem to point to his furward running not being totally unexpected. Paganelli, Benzora, Kaiti, Nancy Lee, Freehold and Oration all have friends, but when the totalisator ceases operating the favourites may be Benzora (A. Ellis) and Freehold (J. Potter). Mitehelson Cup Field The way is now paved for the Mitchelson Cup (2.27 p.m.) which has attracted a fine field of handicappers. Star Stranger is at the head and his gallops at headquarters have brought him along in fine style and there are indications that on a firm track he will be liable to finish well up. Mask, too, has been going exceptionally well and he is more forward than the topweight, so that he may head him off. Te Kara is back to his best and with rain would have a good chance. The Hawk has not so far shown that he will run out a strenuous twelve furlongs. Laughing Prince has been working brilliantly at headquarters and he will lack., nothing on the score of condition. He may be the actual machine favourite, Valkon will go best of those further down, with Catkin certainly a possibility, particularly if it is wet. Present indications point to Mask and Laughing Prince as likely to be the elect of the public. Probable starters and riders are: Star Stranger 9.12 (A. Tinker). Mask 9.4 (B. 11. Morris). Te Kara 9.4 (R. McTavish). Laughing Prince 8.10 (L. G. Morris). The Hawke 8.4 (J. Barry). Valkon 7.12 (L. Manson). <’atkin 7.6 (11. Wiggins). Royal Mint 7.6 (T. Green). Mint Leaf 7.6 (C. Goulsbro). Queen Arch 7.2 ( ) Desert Glow 7.0 (J. Cammick). I’apatu 7.0 (J. Day). Transformer 7.0 (S. Tremain). Tidal 7.0 ( ). Sir Archie 7.0 (J. S. Potter). Pompeius should have won the Hunt Cup last Saturday by the proverbial street, the race being thrown away by his rider. He has another chance in the Hunters’ Steeplechase (3.7 p.m.) tomorrow and at the difference he should account for Importer, a good and high-ly-bred horse now climbing in the weights. The Juveniles ’ ‘ ‘ Classic. ’ ’ Supremacy won so easily in the Avondale Stakes a fortnight ago that he will be a warm order in the Welcome Stakes (3.47 p.m.)on a firm ground 1 Some of the other youngsters may make a better showing and they are Clever, First Money, Hunting Day, Eaglet and Ceremony, and after Supremacy it is likely that First Money will come next in the estimation of betting folk. The big iiield of 24 threatens to line up for the Gordon Handicap (4.32 p.m) and two Avondale double winners— Storm Fiend and Arikitoa—to be ridden respectively by B. H. Morris and A. sHis, will come in for a lot of support. Proceedings to-morow will conclude with the Flying Handicap (5.17 p.m.) with its 22 acceptors. This is an exceedingly difficult field to sum up for the race is particularly open, but two not lacking friends now are Flying Juliet (B. Morris) and Royal Doulton (E. Tuohey).

THE CARTERTON FAIR FIELDS FOR TO-DAY. (By “Kestrel.”) In view of the fact that the Wellington and Masterton meetings are due to be held within the next fortnight, a great deal of interest attaches to the Carter ton fixture, which will be held at Clareville to-day. Useful fields are engaged in most of the events, though iu the case of the Carrington High-weight and the Bunny Memorial the starters will be few. The Trial Plate and the Electric Hack will, however, make up for this. The following should be prominent in their engagements to-day:— Trial Plate —Jet Black, Roi de Vai, Veronese. Carrington High-weight —Hymgreat, Otauru Lass. Wairarapa Cup. —Vigilance, David Garrick, Talisker. Carterton Hack. —Baskicr, Barneses, Arrow Boy. Bunny Memorial. —Vertigcrn, High Disdain. Taratahi Hack.—Courageous, Rotowhero. Maungaraki Handicap. —Royal Game, Anolo. Electric Hack. —Banket, Arrow Boy, Rory Mor. 8. Reid’s apprentice, J. Gunn, is booked for Roi de Vai. Sky Bird (or The Dove), Tripos, Lady Gay, and Arch Arrow at the Carterton meeting to-day. LIMERICK’S PROGRAMME IS STILL UNCERTAIN MELBOURNE RACEGOERS MAY BE DISAPPOINTED [ Australian Press Assn. ] SYDNEY, Oct. 5. Although Roscrea has been booked for return to New Zealand by to-day’s boat, Limerick’s programme is uncertain. He will remain in Sydney for the present in order to test ’.ether the sore heel will yield to treatment. Mr Knight is returning to New Zealand. Racing enthusiasts at Melbourne are greatly disappointed at Limerick’s breakdown.
