“PIERROTS DANCED WITH PARSONS, CHARLIE CHAPLIN WITH PRIM MAIDS...” SO SAYS “PORTIA.”

Bear Wendy.— Wi.l you please excuse me for not writing to you last week or the week before, as mother has been veery ill. and I had to do the housework, so didn’t find time to xvrite. On Friday. September 21, the annual school ball took place. T will give you my version of it. The sounds of merry music floated on the night air. while from the inter!or of the town hall gay laughter could be heard. The building itself was brilliantly lighted. and from the open doors a soft radiance was cast over the street. Inside the hall was a blaze of colour. Upstairs many proud parents were sitting watching grand march, which was a notable feature, led by the infants, while the dangers whirled past. Pierrots danced with parsons, funny old men with dainty ladies, and Charlie Chaplins with prim and proper early Victorian maids, who. in spite of their dignified apparel, seemed rather to enjoy the antics of their jesting partners. The night, wore on. and all werr enjoying themselves very much; but as the clock ticked on towards the hour of ten. supper was announced, so the little ones forthwith tripped off to the supper rooms, and. oh. what a sight met their eyes! The rooms were prettily decorated, and the long tables were almost weighed down with a variety of choice foods. Jellies and cream, fruit salads, cakes and sweets were all there, and soon the sounds of gay laughter told that the children were doing justice to the excellent repast before them. However. »t was soon time for the smaller ones to return home, while the bigger children still danced on. But all good times must come to an end, and soon the hall was left empty, while a tired but happy procession of clowns, flowers and comedians marched slowly homewards. Thus came an end to a perfect day, I mean night; you’ll be thinking we were dancing all day and night if I put dav. I am enclosing some cigarette cards. T must close now. With a hug and a kiss to you and all the Wendyites—From “PORTIA," Taihape. I am so pleased the school fancy dress ball was such a success, my dear, and let m* congratulate you on your excellent description of the gay scenes, and the merry laughter of the little children as they danced to the strains of music. How I love to watch them. There is no other occasion more looked forward to, with the exception of holidays, perhaps. than the annual function—the school hall. The joy reflected in their faces is ample payment for the energy expended in organising the functions, and I am always glad when I hear from my readers that their school is going to have a fancy dress ball, for I know . it will be at least one occasion upon which they will enjoy themselvea to their hesrt’i ■ content.—Wendy.
