TE NGUTU JERSEYS

SUCCESSFUL SALE A successful sale of Mr Fred Hoskin’s herd of pedigree Jersey cows was held on the farm at Matapu (near Eltham) recently. With the exception of tho cow Neat Vwlcttc, on. which Mr Hoskin .had reserved the right of one bid, the animals were all sold at prices which were not high considering the great quality anil production of the cows, but in view of the age of the cows wore quite satisfactory. The average age oj the! cows sold was over seven years. Mr E. Griffiths, the sales manager for Newton King, Limited, in openittrf' tho sale spoke of the credit due Mr Hoskin for building up so fine < herd, a herd which under tho group testing association stood at the top of the Eltham group, the 95 cows in‘ the herd (grades and pedigrees) hav- ! tho lino average of 3381 - fat. la< view of the very severe draught which’ was experiencerl and which caused Mi* Hoskin for a lime to cart water from an adjoining farm, to water his it was a very lino record indeed. herd was exceptional in two particu*’. lars, namely, that mammitis and al»ortion were unknown. ' When farmers are tempt cd to dwell ' too long on the alleged lack of cod--1 sidcration they receive at the hands ot j Parliament (a not uncommon complaint I of the man on the land) they might | consider for a moment how great an influence their representatives wield in the House. The rejection of tho Summertime Bill recently is a striking de-, monstration of the consideration given to their affairs. There ran bo no doubt that the greater part of the opposition to the continuanec of the Daylight Saving legislation of last session ramAi from the farmers, and the result of last week’s deliberations might well be cited J as one of the reasons why the Farmers’ i Union should not become embroiled in i party politics as was suggested at the . annual conference of that body last ; week.
