HOW TO FLANGE A COPPER TUBE
A SIMPLE OPEBATION Not infrequently a copper tube will crack near the base of its flange, causing a leak which cannot be stopped at once. It is a simple matter to repair this break quickly, even when only limited facilities are available. After removing the tube, and exposisg the break, grasp the flauge with the pliers and a few bends back and forth 'will extend the crack around the tube an»d detach the entire flange. Wrap two or three layers of tape and tube in the jaws of a pair of ordinary pliers, the tape serving to protect the tube. After smooth!tg tf the end of the tube with a file, use a centre punch or similarly shaped rod to flare out the end metal. The endi of the punch is inserted a short distame in the tube and the upper end mo» cd in a circle which is gradually incieased until the proper-sized flange i- obiaineii
This procedure gives a smooth, even flange, ami can be depended upon to make a tight joist. Don’t fo-get to see that the union is on the tube before beginning the flange. The tube wiil be. me st conveniently held l in a vise when such is available, buc the tib? must then be protected by » woooen bkek. Take any smail block at Land, bore a hole the size of the tube, and then saw through the block on l hc centre line of the ho.e. The two l.a'ves are then placed about the tube and clampco in the vise. When there is much of this work it will be found profitable to make up a block of the kind described. In this case hole© to take several sizes of tubh.g are bored in a line in the block, and the block cut through on this line. A spring is then secured to the two .helves, and tending to separate them will hold them out against the jaws of the vise winn the latter are opened to i emove or insert the tubing.
