ISLAND OF DESPAIR

AMERICA’S FRONT DOOR IMMIGRANT COMMITS SUICIDE. An Englishwoman immigrant has taken her life while under detention at Ellis Island, the immigration station for arrivals at the port of New York. Miss Martha Marshall arrived some time ago from England and was detained at the immigration station for inquiries. She became despondent at the delays which occurred in the hearing of her claim for admission, and to-day she leaped 20ft. from a balcony. She died from her injuries. Another message states that Miss Marshall, who was 60 years of age, had gone to America to join her relatives for Christmas. It is stated that ad formalities for obtaining Miss Marshall’s release had been completed with the exception of the payment of a bond for £lOO, which is necessary under the regulations.
