MELBOURNE, Feb. 2L The hearing has commenced in the High Court of an application by the Sydney newspapers “Sun,” “News/’ “Herald” and “Telegraph’ to restrain the New South "Wales Government from enforcing its halfpenny newspaper Lax. Twelve barristers and five King’s counsel are engaged in the case.

The Commonwealth Government has been given leave to intervene to argue the invalidity of the tax on the grounds that it constitutes an intrusion into the Commonwealth’s Domain.

At the conclusion of Mr McTiernan’s argument on behalf of the New South "Wales Government, the Chief Justice said he would not call on counsel for the newspaper proprietors to reply. After a consultation among the judges it was announced that judgment would be reserved.
