HUNTERVILLE.

PERSONAL (From the li Chronicle’s’’ Special Correspondent). Air A. T. Gatrell, recently of the Argyle Hotel (Hunterville), has taken over the Alarton Hotel from Air J. Hannan. Mr and Airs Gatrell are at present staying with friends in Feilding prior to taking up their residence in Alarton. Constable 11. J. Thompson, whoso annual holiday commenced on Alonday, left yesterday with Airs Thompson on a motoring tour of the South Island. They are accompanied by Air and Airs W. J. Thompson, of Levin, and intend to visit the Exhibition before returning a month hence.

During the absence of Constable. Thompson on holiday, Constable Christinas, of Wanganui, will act in Hunterville.

Airs J. Klue underwent an operation for appendicitis in the Wanganvi Hospital on Sunday. Friends will be pleased to learn that she is progressing as well as can be expected. Messrs J. F. Perry, T. Chisholm and W. Still, spent the. Easter holidays with rod and line at Lake Taupo. Air P. Davidson, of Inglewod and formerly of Rewa, is spend Lug holidays with friends in this district. Prior to his departure from Hunterville on Thursday Air F. H. Garner wtts made the recipient of a toilet outtit from numerous friends. Airs R. P. Ansley wade the presentation, and Air A. C. F. Charles spoke in fitting terms on behalf of those present. Aliss Dewhirst, who has been tcbcher at the Putorino school for some time and has been promoted to a position on Palmerston Central school staff, w s farewelled by children and parents last Wednesday afternoon. Air C. L. Raine (chairman of the School Committee) referred to the many good qualities of the departing guest and on behalf of the pupils presented her with a travelling rug and a handsome bedroom clock. BOY SCOUTS At the usual parade of the local Scouts on Wednesday evening Airs W. H. Aid worth (examiner) and Rev. C. R. Kreeft (Scoutmaster), presented the badges recently won by the boys. Following is the list of successes:—Second Class Baxlge: A. Dukeson, W. Stevens, Al. Graham. G. Follas, A. Stratford, S. Powell, J. Dallas. B. Graham; Tenderfoot Badge: H. Mill, I. Aidworth, D. Graham, A. Jonson; Naturalist Badge: A. Dukeson, A. Stratford, J. Dallas; Cook’s Badge: A. Dukeson; Swimming Badge. A. Dukeson, W. Stevens, J. Dallas. The Scouts put up b. good performance at the Palmerston Caledonian sports on Alonday, easily holding their own against more experienced troops in both the marching and relay competitions. In the latter they secured third place, and their work in the for--1 mer was decidedly creditable in view of the fact that it was their first appearance in public. The Bulls troop again added to its laurels by winning the shield. GENERAL NEWS At the Wanganui bowling tournament each of the Hunterville rinks (skipped by Towers and Ansley) secured three wins and four losses. The players showed good form and should give a good account of themselves in the final for the Rangitikei Shield on Friday. The football season opens next week, Hunterville juniors playing Athletic at Hunterville on Wednesday and the seniors playing Rata nt Hunterville on the following Saturday. “Stereoscopiks” were screened in Hunterville on Saturday and Alonday evening and caused considerable amusement. On Alonday evening the New Zealand production “Rewi’s Last Stand” was shown in the presence of it large audience. A meeting is to be held shortly to .discuss the formation of a Ladies’ Hockey Club. Last season a number of enthusiasts endeavoured to revive interest in the game, and it is hoped thtat this season they will meet with more success.
