OKEHU WATER SUPPLY
WASTAGE AFFECTS SUBURBAN AREAS EXTRAVAGANT USE OF HOSE With the advent of the warmer weather, a shortage has developed in regard to the Okehu water supply. Alarm at the situation that was likely to arise, if the wastage that was prevalent at the present time was allowed to continue, was expressed to a reporter yesterday by a City Council official, who urged householders to realise the necessity for exercising reasonable care in connection with the quantities of water used. “There is plenty of water for everybody, if waste is prevented,” he pointed out, “but the sudden drop in the pressure recorded at the beginning of tho week is a clear indication of fin excessive demand on tho single main, which forms the connecting link between Westmere reservoir and the city.” Many residents of Durie Hill and St. John’s Hill, as a consequence of disregard being shown for the provisions made for conserving the water supply, are finding themselves without an adequate supply of water except at night. To them, the specUacle of those more fortunately situated busily eag ,g<-d hosing their gardens, without, in some in-lances showing regard for lhe stipulated hour for such use oi the water supply, is particularly irritating. A more serious. aspect of the situation, is the increased danger that is occasioned in the case of •?. fire, as the heavy draw-off from the supply naturally reduces tbj available pressure, moro particularly in the suburban areas, which are served by small mains of considerable length. E/ery precaution is being taken by the city officials to minimise the continual wastage of water, and it behoves all householders to conform to the regulations regarding hosing and keeping t r .ps and fitthings in good order. Inspectors are abroad, and those efiugnt in the act of wasting tho supply will bo prosecuted.
