“THE UNITY OF LABOUR.”
The most amusing aspect of the municipal elections is the way the Labour Party has waded into a fratricidal fight. Last election, two years ago, there were several candidates standing in Labour interests. They were keen on their job. One of them declared in a speech in the Opera House that they would have to fight the business community of the town fiercely and relentlessly. None of the candidates were elected that time. This year there is an Labour man standing. He describes himself as “sane Labour” and disclaims any connection with the firm next door because the Official Labour Party is too “red” for him. The chairman and secretary of the party have written to the Press dissociating themselves from any connection with the candidate, because he is too “red” for them. Both parties are plainly calling each other prevaricators. Yet Labour talks about the unity of Labour! So far the candidate has had the best of the “scrap.” It now only remains to be seen whether his fellow unionists will honour the promises he says they have made.
