HYDRO-ELECTRICITY.
THE KABIOI SCHEME. ‘S CHECK GUAGTNGS SHOW BETTER FLOW. 10,000 HOBSE-POWER PROBABLf AVAILABLE. 7000 H.P. ASSURED WITHOUT STORAGE. Taking advantage of the exception* ally dry weather of the last month, Mr B. B. Swinburn, A.M.1.K.E., borough engineer of Raetihi, was a?ked by Messrs Mair and tUaveley to take check guagmgs of the Tokeahuru and Wangaehu streams at the site of the proposed hydro-electric schemes at Kanod. The re-'iilts obtained showe/1 a total stream flow of 420 cubic feet per second, as against 300, whiJjh had been assumed as a safe minimum. If this ixwding. which was taken during the driest spell which h;u> prevailed for the past ten years, is a fair indication, then 7000 h.p. is obtainable from the streamflow instead of 5000. and there is every indication that this can be increased by storage to 10,000 h.p. LOWER HVTT SETS TO WORK. MANGAROA BTVER TO BE HARNESSED. (Per Press Association.) Proopsals for providing LoweT Hutt with a special hydro-electric’ suply for lighting and power have now taken concrete form. It m intended to utilise the Mangaroa River r above Upper Hutt, to generate electricity there, and to bring in current at 11,000 volts, to be transformed for distribution and usp at tho same voltage (250) as the Majigahao supply. 4 The cost will be £37,706. and the distribution of system £29,891. The annual cost, will be £6890. It is estimated that the demand will growj from £125 h.p. in the first winter* to 3070 in the fourth, increasing by 75 h.p. until the demand is satisfied.
