Anzac Day was observed as a holiday on the waterfront yesterday, so no work was carried out on vessels in port. After a voyage of seventy days from Cardiff, the Wirrall Transport Company’s steamer Doonholm arrived in the stream at Lyttelton on Friday afternoon. The Doonholm left the Welsh port on February 15th and met with fair weather crossing the Atlantic. The Panama Canal was cleared on Alarch 13th and the voyage was uneventful until April 14th, when nearing the New Zealand coast, a fierce south-westerly gale -was encountered, which lasted until Wednesday of this week. The Doonholm made very slow progress against the storm, her speed averaging only four knots for the six days in which she was in it. On her worst days she averaged only 2.9 knots. A rather unusual feature in these days is a set of .sails carried by the vessel, but with a following wind the sails are spread and compensate to some extent for low engine powex.
