DAVIS CUP PLAYERS IN SYDNEY. INTERESTING STATEMENTS. Received January 11, 9.5 p.m. SYDNEY, January 11. The American tennis players arrived by the Makura en route to Melbourne, where they commence a three days’ match against Australia during the week end. Mr Hardy, manager of the team, said he had never seen a better court than the one on which the Davis Cup was played. The Australians also arrived by the Makura. They were enthusiastic about Tilden and Johnson, Brookes stating that they were the two greatest tennis players in the world. At an informal reception Tilden stated that the court arrangements and the handling of the matches were perfect and above criticism.
