BRITAIN’S UNEMPLOYED.
NUMBERED BY THOUSANDS. BENEFIT SOCIETIES OUT OF FUNDS. Received Jan. 11, 7.40 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 10. It is estimated that the partially unemployed in Britain number thousands. Birmingham and Bradford have 50,000 each; Nottingham 20,000; Leeds 16,000; Sheffield and Edinburgh 8000; Lancashire and Cheshire aggregate 400,000. London boards of guardians are distributing relief at the rate of a million yearly. Provincial cities are undertaking road schemes. Some Lancashire operatives’ associations have been forced to suspend benefit payments for lack of funds.
