NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Early Bird.”) Crucelle and Simon, winners at the btrattord meeting last week, have been i nominated for the Foxton meeting. • Excellent nominations have been made tor the b oxton R.C. annual meet- . ing on 22nd and 24th Inst., and indications point to this gathering (always a 'popular one with Wanganui racegoers) i being a record one. [ The Waverley trainer W. H. Dwyer, . who has Active and Lady Nassau In his ! stable, last week took up Mr T. O’Neill’s . ttyo-year-old filly by Absurd-Gladiole. .This youngster is one of tiie finest lookling and most promising of her age in this district, and in the seasons to come should be of great service to her connections. All the Absurds are smart over distance* up to a mile. The filly’s dam, Gladioli was a fine sprinter too, so the sanguine hopes appear to be well founded. It is not often that horse trainers : turn their active attention to outdoor sports, but the Waverley mentor, Harold Rayner, is an exception. He was jseen m action on Cook’s Gardens on Saturday afternoon with one of the Waverley cricket teams playing against I Wanganui. The popular trainer was (batting in good style until his innings was brought to a sudden close by a L nasty smack on the left hand from the ball m its erratic career, probably to ; prevent the batsman “getting up on the rails. It was a painful crack and nejcessitated medical attention, and will no doubt be troublesome. H. Rayner ! will now doubtless be turned out into the paddock for a time. Horse-training is at times far safer than cricket, which , is not the "soft” game it is generally i considered to be. .[ The Wanganui sportsman Mr W. iDuncan, possesses a fine two-year-old in • famatete (who won the juvenile race on the second day at Marton). Tamatete (Absurd—Taliua) was the biggest youngster at the meeting, and on his performance, with the difference in poundage, must have given Rational a good go on the first day. It will be remembered that he lost his rider at the | start, and took no part in the first day’s i : race. , ! R. J. Mason with Gloaming. Vepucci > and Rossini, and H. Cutts with Wiri- . nmg Hit, Miss Mimic, and Counter- ; stroke have already reached Trentham j to await the opening of the Cup meet- ) [ i I During the four days’ racing at EI- . ; lershe H. Gray earned £332 in fees . !y o h Jj e the hu-ht-weight T. Glover earned ! • , Reed # ot cheque for £l6B . ar,<i B. Deeley £l2l. Gray rode nine ) winners at Ellerslie. lr xJ r * Dun . ca n had the misfortune to ! lose the services of his promising three--3 eai*-old Demand for the holiday meet- » i'lgs. but the half-brother to Client is H now all right again, and will be raced in the near future. > ! It is not often that one trainer sup- • plies the two top-weights in a big j event, but this will most likely be the » . experience of the Fordell mentor, F. • Client and Oratress start iri > i the Wellington Cup. , I Gasbag is evidently a hardy colt. Tn ( • the Cup and Derby he was called upon ’; 1° r^ n , two severe races, and on the . i fourth day he displayed true'.grit in > endeavouring to cope with the brilliant ' i ln the de cision of the Auckland Plate. Gasbag can be referred to as a well furnished colt. The four-year-old horse Nightraider passed into the hands of Mr Y r iedlande r during the progress of the A.R.C. summer meeting. When engaged m carrying Sir George Clifford’s colours Nightraider was afforded plenty of . eppotunities to distinguish himself but i ' •-V, e < to - ryn up to his hi & h breeding. It will be interesting to note whether a change of quarters will bring a change of form in Nightraider. Gloaming having come through his • exertion in the decision of the Auckland Plate without a recurrence of the bleeding trouble which sent him into retirement in the early spring, Mr G. D Greenwood will be encourged to make ■ another assault on the Australian turf , j with The Welkin gelding when the au- ■ I tumn meetings come round. So far as can be seen Gloaming is as good as ever he was, and when the fact is borne in l mind that he ran the mighty Poitrel to a head in the decision of the spring stakes at Randwick in .1919, and. that at the same meeting he won the Craven ■ Plate in 2m. s ’As., he will command a | deal of respect, let the company that. opposes him be as strong as it may. J'rom the date of Mermin making his initial appearance under silk it has never been doubted that in the son of

Absurd Mr G. L. Stead possessed a very speedy colt, and the brilliancy of Merinin’s recent efforts undoubtedly entitles him to be placed with the best of his age that has. graced the turf in this Dominion. In his concluding engagement Mermin had to be called upon to do his best to win under a 101 b. penalty, and the manner in which he answered and stretched out to his task demonstrated in addition to speed he possesses 'the quality of gameness. Witn seven successive victories down to the credit of Mermin Mr W. G. Stead has good reason to look back with pleasure to the day at Wanganui when the chestnut colt fell to his bid of 625 gns. Tfin following is a full statement .of Mermin’s winning performances:— Stakes Won Avondale Stakes, 4 furlongs, 8.1: time, 51s 450 Won Hastings Stakes, 4 furlongs, .8.5; time, 49 3-5 s 290 Won Wellesley Stakes, 4 furlongs, 5.7; time, 47 1-5 s 700 Won C.J.C.
