RAeNGITIKEI MOTOR CLUB’S

RACE MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent.' MARTON, Jan. 7. Now that the racing season in Marton is over for a time, the public's attention is drawn to the Rangitikei Motor Club’s race meeting on the Marton Racecourse on Saturday, February 19th. A splendid programme of eight events has been arranged, over different distances and fcr good stakes. The first race will start at 1 o'clock and the events will be continued at intervals of half an hour. The programme is as follows: —Open Handicap, six miles: Novice Cup Handicap, challenge cup and trophies, five miles; Marton Handicap, of £l6. 10 miles; Gaisford Cup, 12 miles; Bulls Handicap, for machiltes up to 600 c.c., six miles; Heavy-weight Championship of New Zealand, championship ribbon and £l2 in prizes. 10 miles; Woodville Cup Handicap, silver challenge cup £ll in prices, eight miles. Entries close on Saturday, February sth, at 9 p.m., and entry forms can be obtained from Mr K. H. Fowler, secretary, P.O. Box 6, Marton. The programme appears in another column.

GENERAL NEWS. The many friends in Marton of Mr Harry Monk will regret to hear of his death at Wellington on Thursday morning. During his stay in Marton he was employed at the White Hart, and made many friends. As a member of the Cosmopolitan Club he took a prominent part in the social life of the club, and his vocal contributions were always well received. He recently celebrated his seventieth birthday, but he was. ot such a jovial disposition that tew would believe that he had passed the three score years and ten. He was a son of Judge Monk, of Mauritius, who, with his wife, lo"st their lives in a tidal wave some years ago. The late Mr Monk was a passenger on the Penguin when she was wrecked, and was also one of the relief parly of the Scott Antarctic Expedition. Mr Duncan Fraser, whose death occurred at Palmerston on Wednesday, was the eldest son of the latte Mr Donald Fraser, of Pnkehou, Rangitikei. His only brother was killed in France. He was unmarried, and leaves the following sisters—Merlin mes D. H. Guthrie, of Feilding, F. Gorringe, of Levin; T. Scott, of Wanganui; and the Misses May, Kate, and Sidney Fraser, of Pat-e--wanui. The deceased gentleman enlisted when the Boer war broke out, and joined the ranks as a veterinary surgeon, and was afterwards promoted to lieutenant. He also took a great interest in blood stock, and owned Square Deal when that horse wen the Marton Cup in 1916. The burial will take place in the family cemetery at Parewanui.

BUSINESS NOTES. Lloyd’s, Ltd., have just received a large assortment of floor rugs, which comprise sofa, bedside, and hearth rugs, small squares, etc., which are of excellent quality. Old hats are made to look like new ones after being blocked at Lloyd’s, Ltd., at a moderate charge. Now is the time to purchase your diaries—pocket or office—at A. B. Innes’s, who has also an extensive stock of English tea and dinner sets at all prices. Now that the festive season is over attention is being paid to the young married couples, who are deserting of wedding gifts, and in this department R. F.
