WHEAT-GROWING.
STATEMENT IN. THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 31. Replying to Mr. E. Newman, in the Hous e this afternoon, the Minister for Agriculture stated that 179,000 acres were sown in wheat in the South Island. Possibly 50,000 additional acres would be gut in during the spring. He doubted if this would be sufficient to meet local requireemnts. T. lie Government, hoAvever, were not urging farmers to sow wheat on unsuitable lands, whioh could only result in disaster. It Avas quite true that there was a big yield in Australia, but there was great riiiHcuilty in getting grain shipped to New ZeaTaria. Therefore he considered it wise to grow as much wheat s.s possible m this country.
