THE ROUMANIAN ARMIES SAVED

(Times;)

Received August 29, 11.30 p.m. " LONDON, August 29. Describing the reconstituted Roumanian Army's magnificent fight against .Mackensen on August. 19th, a correspondent on the Marasesri front says that captured orders* revealed that the Germans intended to strike a decisive blow, crossing the Sereth and capturing Jassy and the whole of Moldavia. Mackensen attacked when the Roumanians were replacing Russian troops. The Roumanians, though outnumbered' by

three to one, successfully resisted at-

. tempts to cross. The enemy losses J were enormous. The twelfth Ba-

varians were annihilated. The Ger- ' mans brought, twelve divisions endeavouring to force a crossine,, which, if successful, would have pierced the Roumanian front, en-

dangering the whole of the armies

The Roumanians heroically sacrificed one division and foiled the German plans. The Roumanians beat off numerous atacks during the following days, though whole regiments were decimated lay the German guns, machine-guns and gas, officers and soldiers dying at their positions and refusing to withdraw or surrender. The last big German effort resulted in a thrilling climax in the presence of Prince Carol,.who fought with the soldiers. The Germans had managed to piece the Roumanian entanglements, when the last Roumanian reserves were thrown in and j attacked with such violence that the enemy fled, throwing away their rifles. The battlefield is still covered with unburied corpses six deep. The stench is unbearable \ a mile aw, ay. The enemy has sllifce made no attempt to resume the offensive. The Roumanians hold the left bank of the Seveth and dominate the right. '<
