PLENTY OF VOLUNTARY LABOUR.
UNLOADING OPERATIONS PRO-:
CEEDING SMOOTHLY.
The wa+ersiders are still in holiday mood, and although a mravbjf of them frequented customary jfaunts yesterday, they maintained their previous attitude of indifference when work was offered. x
Throughout Tuesday night voluntary, labour carried on the waterside work, and yesterday a number of the volunteers, who at ordinary times are not accustomed to • an undue amount or manual labour, ware able to proudly display blisters as their token of thjafr new-found office. •
The operations went on smoothly throughout yesterday, some very youthful workers lending, a helping hand. The steamer John cleared fqr Wellington, and new shipping arrivals included the Storm and the Kapiti, the former laden with produce, anoLthe iat-1 ter with » cargo largely of case oil. The Woottcn 'also turned- up, but her cargo being shoep, was able to automatically discharge itself. Then© was quite an' air of activity on the wharf, and .familiar faces could be seen in ' strange- places. At the afterhatch \of the Breeze a Master of Arts and a reverend gentleman perspired generously and toiled industriously. At the fore-hatch a dungaree-garbed member of the Beautifying Society dexterously manipulating a winch, white a leading member of the local legal fraternity "ran the cutter" and put in a well-tamed appearance with -a jar of ginger-ale. Below in the hold, a dentist helped a retired farmer to extract sacks of. flour ' from dose-built tiers. Throughout the afternoon and evening the amateur watersiders kept their end up and did splendidly. There-is no dearth of volunteers, who, with' a couple of days' experience, have proved almost as expert as the men they have succeeded. There is great public interest evinced, and noteworthy has been the large number of ladies who have watched the unloading
