HOLLWEG ON AMERICAN SITUATION.
CANNOT AFFECT BLOCKADE.
(Reuter.) Received February 5, 8.20 p.m. STOCKHOLM, February 4
In diplomatic circles it is stated that Count Bethmann Hollweg had a secret conference with the Reichstag leaders The latter enquired whether the results of the newsubmarine policy would compensate for the possibility of America's hostility. Hollweg replied: If the blockade succeeds it will succeed in a limited number of weeks, wherein America cannot effectively participate. The German Admiralty calculates that the world tonnage is reaching the minimum compatible with the Entente continuing the war. It is true tlftt America is able to turn out munitions and soldiers indefinitely,' but they are only exportable by jeopardising the Entente's armies and peoples and their own tonnage shortage.
