THE LUSITANIA CRIME.
NEW YORK, October 13. Mr Hughes, Republican candidate for the Presidency, speaking at Louisville, Kentucky, for the lirst time denned his position re the Lusitania. Answering a heckler, he declared that, if he had^ been President when the German Embassy issued its »yarning that the Lusitania would be sunk, he would have announced that the sinking would be followed by a break in diplomatic relations, and the Lusitania would then never have been sunk.
Hitherto Mr Hughes has invariably discussed German-American relations in generalities. His Louisvijje announcement is accepted as meaning that Republicans fear they will lose the election through the Democrats',' charge that Mr Hughes is the Kaiser's candidate, and unless Mr Hughes ceases calling for the German-Ameri-can vote- '
