The Austrians followed a, new plan of saving their munitions for the moment of the assault when tha barraga of lire was intense. .Prior to the attack, Austrian officers deprived the men of their handkerchiefs, but eagerness to surrender was so great that the Austrians took eft their shirts and waved them as signals.
Many prisoners declared that they had been without food or fifty hours At least 24,000 Au&trians were killed.
