• A .man was charged at the Auckland Police Court the other day witth stealing an umbrella, but the Magistrate admitted that lie himself had recently found himself in possession of a strange umbrella without remotest idea as to where he got it; and he therefore sympathised with the accused, who hid forgotten that he had left this own rmbrolla at home, and had picked up one beside him in a tramcar and carried itt oft' jo his office. The case was dismissed, th© i"eai owner got back his property j and tiie Court laughed over the Magistrate's confession, whi.'e the solicitors and reporters unconsciously looked nt their own respective gamps to make sure that they, too, had not committed the time-honoured mistake.
