CORRESPONDENCE.

ONE OF THE TWO.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln your sub-leader yesterday morning you made the unworthy and ratner cinldish suggestion that the refusal of myself and another member.of the Durie Hill School Committee to sign the petition to Mr Pirani was in, some way connected with our employment at the " Herald" Office. Fstrongly resent such an imputation. Mr Simp_ son, the other member of the committee mentioned, was not even asked to sign the petition. For my part I declined,; to sign the petition for reasons which appeared to me sufficient, and would do so again. I flo not know what conditions obtain in the "Chronicle" Office, s but can assure you the members of the " Herald" 6taff form their own opinions, without reference to the policy of the paper. lam sorry my contumacy should have spoiled the unanimity of, the. " graceful compliment" to Mr Pirani, but, feeling as I do, no other course was open to me. — I am, etc. 3

JOHN G. McLEAN, (Chairman D.H. 5.0.)

(We merely remarked on the curious coincidence that the only two members of the four committees who had declined to sign the requisition were members of the staff of our evening contemporary. The" statement that the only two out of the thiry-two who declined to sign were Messrs. McLean and Simpson was not made by us. but by the spokesman of the -deputation which presented the requisiton to Mr Pirani. That gentleman will doubtless be pleased if it should prove that he has been misinformed as to Mr Simpson's attitude, a fact which will, of course, be obviously demonstrated when the re--sult of the voting is published.—Ed. ''Chronicle.")
