SCULLING.
X.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP
HANXAN TO CHALLENGE FOG-
WELL.
P. Hannan has come to the conclusion that he would like to become the sculling champion of his own country—New Zealand. The holder of the title at present isW. H. Fogwell,, ex-Northern Rivers champion, who beat George Whelch for the New Zealand title at Akaroa, shortly before he rowed Ernest Barry on the Thames.
It is only in recent years that there has been any properly drawn up agreement as to the championship of the Dominion, although it is more than 30 years since W. Hearn was recognised as the champion. The course must be in New Zealand, the stakes not less than. £100 aside, and there is a time limit as to when a Challenge must be accepted ; also as to the racing date. If Fogwell accepts Hannan's challenge it will be difficult to say what may happen. On the other hand, should the title pass by forfeit, it would probably lead to one or two matches in New Zealand; and a revival in sculling here is much to be desired.
