COMPENSATION CLAIM

A favourable recommendation has been made to the Government by the A to L Petitions Committee in regard to the petition of Mr J. Cody, of Ohakune, who prayed for compoi-sation for loss sustained by the cancellation of a wholesale liquor license. Two or three members of the House contended that if the Government paid compensation in this case it would establish a dangerous precedent, but other members held that bho Government had arrivedl at a just decision. ■"■• | Mr J. H. Bradney (Auckland West) said, that the only question to be considered was whether the petitioner had suffered loss by the action of the Licensing Committee. It had been stated in evidence that the petitioner and another claimant were both represented by solicitors at successive meetings .of the licensing committee yet no question of the legality of issuing the license was raised. The CroverniDent should be1 responsible for the acts of its servants. Evidence before the committee had shown that tho precedent spoken of had been already established. The report was referred to the Government for favourable consideration.
