WHY WORKS WERE CLOSED

The closing of Cockatoo Island is duo to -a recommendation from the Naval Board, following th» .report of an expert that the boiler.?, are unsafe. The Hon. Mr Mi Hen states that when the idea-of constructing the vessels of the Australian navy at Cockatoo Island was started,: the Fitzroy dock there was capable of- doing the work Tho Fisher Government offered ;a' tender for a cruiser -and throe destroyers with the New;.' South Waies Government, which then owned the dock. Friction arose between the dockyard lauthoritieis and the Nawl Board, am] the.latter reported that matters were in such a condition that there-was grave dsk of failure of New South Wales in cempleting vessels. Tho Fisher Government therefore decided to take over the dockyard as the only solution. Mucji of th* machinery was good but a great deal -was obsolete, and the plans generally would largely require reconstruction, which -would seriously delay the completion of the vessels. Mr Millen adds that the Commonwealth made ar extremely bad bargam. '
