LOCAL BODIES AND LABOUR ORGANISATIONS.
LEGAL OPINION
With regard to the question of legal - itv as to whether a local body can contribute to the funds of an Employer*' Association, the following opinion from Messrs. Marshall and Hutton, solicitors, was read at last night's meeting of tho Harbour Boixrd :—"The Association is a registered body, one of its objects being to assist employers in the Court of Arbitration an;l Conciliation. Tho Boa id -is aa employer, and is subject to certain arbitration awards. Th« Association is supported by annual and special .subscriptions. If it were not for the- existence of .the Association the Board might well be called on to employ a third person to protect them in connection with any award or dispute with its employees, and tins is probably srivoci by taking advantage of the ser- \ icor. rendered by the Association. In these circumstances we are opinion the pro-payment is a legal ona." Mr .Muir moved that £5 s;s. bo paid t-o tho Employees' Association, subject to tho lawyers' opinion.
Mr. \Viilia:jis seconded. 'Mi1. Mackay said ho was doubtful with all due respect to Messrs. Marshal! and Hutton's opinion, whether tho Board co'ild contribute to the Eniployfir,' Association, but he was corf am that they could not^ contribute to the emnloypos' f r'gi'iiisation. The motion was lost on tho voices.
