HARBOUR BOARD.

MONTHLY .MEETING.

In attendance at the usual monthly meeting of tho Waiiganui Harbour Board last evening were tho followin. gmembers :— Messrs. J. B. Murray (chairman), W. G. Bassett, C. E. Mackay, W. J. Poison, A. G. Bignell, J. T. Muir, N. Meuli and J. C. Patterson. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. W. Ritchie.

Rutherford's Horse. —J. Rutherford waited on tho Board and tasked for compensation for tho loss of a horse which war, disabled by a falling stone from tho Board's quarries, it was proposed and seconded that tho applicant be granted. £5 without iprejud'fce.—Carried. Finance.—General account, Dr. £5962 2s. 7d. Accounts amounting to £354 17s. 9d. were passed for payment. Pohangina Sections. —Tho *£bmmissioner of Crown Lands wrote proposing, at tho expiration of the lease, to offer tho freehold for cash about tho beginning of the year. Mr. Bignell moved, "That the land be not sold." Mr. Bassott seconded, and it was carried. Mr. Williams moved, "That the matter bo referred to tho Works Committeo to m>ake inquiries as to the value of the sections, and report."—Carried. Signing of Cheques.—The chairman moved, "That any two members of the Financo Committee with either the chairman or tho treasurer, bo authorised to sign cheques."—Carried. Condolence. —It was reported that at a fully-attended special meeting of the Board held after the -funeral of the late Mr. W. Rod well, a motion of sympathy war; forwarded to Mrs. Rod well, the members standing. The meeting confirmed the chairman's action in appointing Mr. F. C Mill ward secretary pro. tern. Thanks. —Messrs. Richardson,' ¥cCal:o and Co. expressed their thanks for having been supplied with Mr. Howarth.'s address as thov are agents for two largo dredge-building firms.—Received. A Dredge.—The Auckland Harbour Board forwarded particulars of their biicket dredge No. 121, built in 1885. —No action taken. Castlecliff Leases.—The Castlecliff Railway Company was informed that unless its offer in respect of the tenuro of tho Board's leases was accepted within threo months, it would be withdrawn. Ashton's Sections.—Mr. S. T. Ash ton having altered tho sub division of his section to tho requirements of tho Board, forwarded copy of plan.—Mr. Bignell moved, "That the sub-division bo not granted unless he refunds to tho Castlecliff Railway Company £5 charged for the removal of tho .sheds.'' —Car-ris-1 Gorso Grubbing.—Tho foreman .was authorised to carry out grubbing of gorso on an area on the river bank at Wangauui East. Taylorville Bank.—Ass the Borough Council cesired to proceed with the work at. the earliest possible date, and tko Engineer was now preparing' the. necessary plans, and ias tho sanction of tho Board was required, the Council asked tho Board to authorise tho works committee to confer with tho committee appointed by tho Council. —Agreed to. with power to act.

Harbour Muster's Report.—The Harbour Master reported having sounded tho bar on the 19th .and 24th, the soundings being equal to 23ft. h.w.s.t. Tho full width of tho channel from mole to mole was in a very satisfactory state. From tho end of the moles to the.Castlecliff wharf, tho depth was 23ft. At tho Castled iff wharf, there was a slight increase in tho average depth, whicn varies from 33ft. at tho lower end to \l6f->. J>i». at the top end. The minimum depth in the river channel at h.w.s.t. wa^Ti^t. 9in. Tho lower reach of tho river from~abrcast of the flag-. st»aff to tho. retaining-,.wa1l ■ -got an increaso in depth by scoiir-..Qf 3ft. during tho last fresh in the river, "^hiring the month 113 vessels entered and departed, giving a tonnago of 13,696 tons.-—■-.

Soundings at tho entrance give a depth of 23ft. at h.w. springs.' Tho depth from the South Spvt to.the Heaus wharf has improved as the result of tho fresh, and is now 17ft. at/ h.w. springs. The.minimum h.w. depth in tho channel is 13ft. 9in.—Adopted.

Foreman's Report.—Mr. J. K. Sutherland, the foreman, reported for the month:— North Mole.—-SSO tons ot stcno were tipped on this mole. South Mole. —A start has been made to remove the timber from the stone landing wharf with a view to shifting it further out into deep water. North Training Wall.--930 tons of rubble were deposited. Quarry.—As tho result of heavy rain a largo slip came down in the quarry and took a week to remove. The output was;- 1510 tons. Planting.—Tho marram grass planting on C-'ifitlecliff beach and sandhills has been completed, a total area of 12 acres having boon done. Dntlgomasler's Kopnrt.—The dredgemast«T, Mr.(.'. .").
