AN ARCHBISHOP'S APPOINTMENT.
ITALY AND THE VATICAN.
LONDON, Dec. 15. The Pope has placed Genoa under a patrial interdict > which' prohibits celebrations and festivals being carried out with the customary splendour that has marked these affairs in the past. Difficulties arose over the nomination of a dignitary named Caron to an archbishopric, the Government refusing to give him the privileges, immunities and exemptions enjoyed by his predecessors. The refusal is attributed to intrigues by Genoese modernists in the Vatican, but it improbable that the Government acted in consequence of the hostility that Caron displayed towards Italy when he was in.
