INFANTILE MORTALITY IN ENG-
LAND
LONDON, Dec. 15. . The report of tho medical officer of elementary schools in Great Britain indicates that one-fifth of the children are of such a low grade as to be unsusceptible to any form of education.
The " Times" in a leading article comments on this fact, and says that it shows that tho health of the children of the labouring classes ifl ©xtonsirely
defective, so much so, indeed, as to amount to a serious national evil. "The general causes/ adds the joxirnal, "are not far to seek. They arise from conditions of feeding, housing and overcrowding, which are universally condemned, and which gain much of their potency from the fact that those subject to them are too often indifferent to their existence and Ignorant of their effects. "Tho baby's comforter," concludes the "Times," "the sale of which ought, to be prohibited by law, lias probably been responsible for more infantile deaths than any disease noted in the report."
