Last night the .'citizens of iPalmerston tendered a farewell to Sir. '-W- T. .Wood, ex-M.H.R., and presented him with ;\ purse of sovereigns; Mr. »Wood is leiving Palmerston to seek health at a seaside- resort.

Major-General C. T. E. Metcalfe, who was associated with the late Sir Gc;rge "White in the defence of Ladysmith during the South. African .War, ha© just died in London. He entered the rv-mv in 1874, and retired two years ago. He was twice mentioned in despatches dui*»ing the South African campaign.Mr. James H. Stevens, Inspector of Post Offices, has decided to retjre from the service on March 31st. He has been granted three months' leave >from the Ist of January, and has arranged to tako up work of a special nature for a mercantile firm.

An interesting ceremony took place on the Wanganui Bowling Clubs' green on Saturday afternoon, when the trophies won by Mr. A. P. London during the previous season were presented by the President (Mr. Cohen). Mr. London's successes were as follows:—Won singles; won pairs with Mj\~ John MoFarlane; won full rinks with Messrs. J. McFarlane, Atkinson and Foster.

The Welington Catholic clergy have received a letter from His Grace Archbishop Redwood, dated Washington, ;*.l4th November. His Grace hoped to i leave New York for Liverpool after that date, and it is considered probable that he will reach Rome about the en<l of i tho year.

She acts as ,agricultural -adviser to no less than 20,000 women, in the Statethat is to say she gives lectures in dairy and poultry farming, domestic science, and general farm work. In addition to this, this remarkable woman has organised and is continuing several agricultural clubs for young people. ■' .
