TRAMWAY MATTERS.
MR. DAVEY'S PROPOSAL DIS-
CUSSED
(Per Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, October 13. Tho proposal introduced by Mr Davey M.P;' on Wednesday into the Tramway's Bill are by no means received with equanimity by .those responsible for the control of the Dunedin Tramways. Mr. Burnett in a conversation with a reporter reierred to the large i» umbor of tramway concessions granted lately and added the opinion that if regulations lik"? those proposed were t.o 1.0 imposed it would simply mean increased fares. He considered it quite possible that those might come in any case, as they were losing money on the trams now.
Mr. S. S. Myers, chairman of the Tramway's Committee, said "Mr. DavcVs, amondinnnt would only affect il cars on1- of 43 in the service, provided_ open cars only be reconstructed, but if ir, if, compulsory that all combination pa-s bo altered it will involve the alteration of 29 cars at expense running into niany thousands* ,Tlie rars in Dunodin and elsewhere have ulrco'ly been passed as safe by the responsible officers of the Government find it is undoubtedly a hardship on the authorities that private member?; can i-tep in with o.u amendment which will put tho bodies to thousands of pounds of expense in making unnecessary alterations." T!;n cost of altering tlie cars in Dunedin would be less Ui.in in other centres, but it is estimated roughly^ at least £-10 per car. No serious accident has ever occurred to uoiiductors on onon cars here.
