TIMARU, October 13. John E. Goodwin, one of the earliest, farmers in the Paikil district, who had taken much interest in the progress of the town and the conveniences of the townspeople, and who was a member of the Timaru Harbour Board died today, aged 56.

Mr. W. Jeffries, who headed the poll at the first ballot of last election, opened the campaign for Temuka seat as an Oppositionist at Temuka to-night. Hfe spoke in favour of the freehold, an elective council, a public service board and would give a trial to tho Vaile Railway system.

, A cottage of 5 rooms, owned by E. Brown and occupied by James Duff, his wife and four children, at Temuka, was destroyed by fire at midnight. Next to nothing was saved. The insurances on the cottage are £275 in the Commercial. Union and the contents £100 in the New Zealand office.
