ROWING.
OPENING OF THE SEASON,
The Wanganui rowing season was officially, but inauspiciously opened on Saturday afternoon. The boisterous weather prevented many from attending, and it was decidedly unpleasant for such enthusiasts, both spectators and oarsmen, as did roll up. Nevertheless, although there was not the Usual gay function, the afternoon passed pleasantly enough. The Mayor (Mr. C. E. Mackay) made a neat little speech, regretting the unseemly weather, but complimenting those present on braving the elemets, and. remarking on the growingpopularity, of rowing, which he had noticed, during the six years he had the honour of performing the opening ceremony. This was, of course, due to the exceptional facilities ~**K:h ' Wanganui young men possessed,. > After, the official declaration, and the wishes of the photographers having been fulfilled, the public were treated to some exhibition races, in all manner of craft and both grave and gay. Then followed afternoon tea, kindly provided by the ladies.
