ENDURANCE PIANO PLAYING

GODFREY

COPLEY

BREAKS

WORLD'S RECORD

Mr Godfrey Copley, the local pianist who started out at 6 o'clock on Wednesday evening to break the world's record lor endurance- piano playing, succeeded at a, minute past 9 o'clock on Saturday night, when he had been playing continuously for over 75 hours. As the pianist accomplished his task, he was heartily cheered by the audience assembled in the Opera House. Mr Copley, who, despite his exhausting task, 'was in good form, decided to play till after II o'clock, in order to add two hours to the previous record. At a. quarter to 11, however, the committee considered Mr Copley had done qtiite enough. The pianist thereupon played "Auld Lang Syne" and "God Save the King," after which, amid loud applause, he left tho keyboard at .which ho had sat so long. So far as could be seen, Mr Copley was quite fresh and could have continued for some hours longer. His time was 76 hours 45 minutes, whiLe the previous record —that put up by Mr Travis, at Napier—was 75 hours.
