THE COMING OF "MADAM BUTTERFLY."
As is generally known, Puccinii'j, great opera "Madam Butterfly" will be given by J. C. Williamson's Grand Opera Company on Monday lidxt, with that brilliant artist Bel Sorel in the. title role^ and on Tuesday "La Bo heme," with Maria Pampari, a wonderful singer, as Mimi. The company will ba the same as that which is achieving so signal a success in AVellington. It may be mentioned that so serious are the efforts demanded from the pirima <!onna in the role of Cho Cho San in "Madam Butterfly," that it is imperative tha-« there should be practically a double company. In the present instance Bel Sorel—the prima donDa who has succeeded in electrifying Wellington with her voice, charm, and enchanting personality—will appear. Remarked Mr Alfred Hill, the young New Zealand composer, recently in Sydney during" an interval of "Madam Butter-fly" ait ;the Theatre Royal: "What pleases me most as a musician is to see the public response to this opera seaon. I've poken to a number of musically uneducated people, and find that they have attended several times, and the enthusiastic way they talk of the music shows that they fully Appreciate its beauty. That's Puccini's strength. He appeals to the cultivated and uncultivated ear alike."
