THE SCOTTISH CHURCHES.

LONDON, June 1. lhe General Assemblies of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church have instructed the joint committee of union" to continue its deliberations and present a complete report at the next assemblies.
Great satisfaction is expressed at this decision, and the committee conferred during the year without coming to an impasse.
The Rev. Norman Maolepd and Lord Balfour of Burleigh were optimistic. Dr George Robson, of the United Free Assembly, stated that the joint committee- had agreed that it was not just that the law should recognise the Established Church, and not the other churches. That they should be in ■"agreement- up to this point was a hopeful sign. The chief diffculty would be to frame conditions of union in no way in-' fringing the Free Church's spiritual independence.
