Though no definite statement has been made yet, it is understood that the Imperial authorities liave expressed the view that defence will be best served not by providing a Dreadnought, but in some other way. Great progress is beings made in the commercial development of the Solomon Islands, where much land has been taken up, chiefly for cocoanut growing. The Attorney-General, referring to tho possibility of the Chicago Meat Trust exploiting Australia, did not wish to say to what extent he could deal with the Trust till he knew the facts. Tho Anti-Trust Bill was directed against combinations injurious to the public, and he thought they could face the situation.
MELBOURNE, June 11. The newspaper "Age," in an article dealing with the condition of the city, says that iri all weathers, and at * all seasons Melbourne persists in being one of the filthiest cities of the civilised world. During the recent wet weather the whole city sit night was anointed with pure beastliness, : and Collins Street was simply carpeted with filth. The "Age": denounces the citizens for tolerating such ,a state of things. , A powerful company has been formed in London to work the rubber plantations in Papua, and lias secured 10,000 acres at Collingwood Bay. Recently a new arrival from New Zealand, while staying at a Melbourne cafe, was robbed of a portmanteau which, among other property, contained a bank book for £1200 in the New South Wales Savings Bank. V A man trying to work one of the accounts was arrested yesterday in Sydney, and all the missing property was recovered.
