(United Press Association—Copyright.) Received May 2, 4.30 p.m.
LONDON, -May 1
Owing to the increase in the liquor licenses, beer has been increased a halfpenny per pint, and spirits a penny per glass. /
A heavy fall has taken place in omnibus and motor shares.
The Unionists in Parliament have appointed four committees to prepare a report on, and amendments , to, the Budget. - ~ ~,,,
It is considered that Mr? Lloyd, jG v eprge has utterley ignored the balance between direct and indirect taxation in order to serve a Parliamentary purpose.
Several complaints are made that the Budget is conjectural as to the yield of the increases.
It is persistently reported that Mr Lloyd George anticipates a large surplus in 1910, thus enabling him to remove considerable taxation and then appeal to the country. ;
Mr Masterman, speaking at Stratford, said the Budget was the biggest instrument. :of social reform ever devised; it waa :■&■•■■ triumph for Socialism. • Every glass of whisky drunk would adda halfpenny for a Dreadnought.
