SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY
A WELLINGTON PETITION
(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, March 28. Yestivday a petition was lodged with tho Town Clerk requesting that a poll bo taken on tho question of determining the day for tho statutory weekly half holiday in the Wellington dis'.rict. The names attached total about 2900 and ifc is a question now whether this number includes at least one-tenth of the municipal electors for the combined districts. No more signatures* can be added because the time for filing the petition has closed. TII2 promoters, whoso purpose is to secure a Saturday half holiday, urge that an assessment about signatures should be made on the basis of tho names actually on the roll at the time-when tho petition was sent in. However, even if t'.-is- plea is granted, it it questionable whether the required, tenth has been obtained. Last year the municipal roll for ' Greater Wellington alone ran to over 28,000 names. It is believed the list for the combined district must now be somewhere near 35.000.
