A NARROW ESCAPE.
THE WAINUI STRIKES A ROCK

Tbo steamer Waintui, from Wellington, had a narrow escape this morning. She encountered a dens© fog near the French Pass, and decided to pass round D'UrV/i'lta Island. At seven o'clock the passengers were startGed by tlie ship striking. There were then rushes on deck. The passengers, mails, and some of the crow were sent away in the boats. The sea was smooth, but the ship had run upon a rock, and wa.s considerably down by the stem. Fears were entea-tai'ined that she might slip off and sink in low water at eight, and at nine she cam-ci off. The place where iih© struck is between Stephen's and D'Urville Islands. No passengers were hurt, and after reembarkation the steamer, came on to Nelson, where she is detained for further examination. An inquiry will be heM to-morrow. The officers declined to give any information, which was obtained from the passengers. They speak highly of the conduct of Captain Hull and his officers.
