Mr Robert Skeen, an old Auckland •boy, has been appointed Chief Magistrate in Tonga. The Dean of Bendigo, the Very Rev. S. J. McCullagh, is aibout to visit New Zealand, for the benefit of his health. Messrs. Fred. Kersley and William Thomson, of Wanganua, faft Wellington for Sydney on Saturday by the Moeraki en route to London.
Mr. Thomas Al!chin, printer, of Milton, and for.many years oommected with tho printing trade in Otago, died of acute pnuemonda on, Thuiseday. He fought fn the Crimea and in the Indian Mutiny. The Rev. T. McDonald, of Waiipukurau, .who has 'accepted1 a call from the congregation to t&ke charge of St. Peter's Church, Christchurch, was inducted to his new office on Thursday evening. Adjutant Henry, who -has been in <sharge of the--..focal Salvation Army corgDs.for the past twelve months, leaves during tihe week for Napier,' where he is to -bestationed.
Mr H. D. Bell, senior memiber of the well-known legal firm of Bell, Gully, Bell •and Mjyers, left Genoa on the 127 th oflast month on ibis-return, to the colony ■via the Suez Can-ad. Mr Beil is expected to arrive in Wellington early next month. ,
Although the Professorial Board has not dealt with the applications -from Victoria College students, "at is understood that "Mr P. W. Robertson, 8.A.. will be again put forward as the candidate of Victoria College If or the Rhodes Scholarship. Mr 'Robertson, it will be remembered, was'Jhe candidate last year. The Canterbury College candidate has not yet been named, but it is highly probable that Mr Archibald E. Currie, 8.A., who last year stood down in ifavour of Mr Cook, will be nominated.
