A QUIVER FULL.

A mati'iedl man defended a. charge of wife desertion in London with great spirit. In excuse of leaving his 'wife and three children, William ©lark pleaded at Sauthwark that he had two Avives and 36 children. The first wife bore 16 and the other 20. One of his offspring had defrauded him. Another was killed in South Africa. The magistrate was so astonished at these statistics that he appealed to a police sergeant for corroborataon. The officer generally supported, but said the second wife thought the number Avas only 18. Hawever, she admitted there were "so- many that she was not quite sure." While insisting on 20, Mi. Clark (a brushmaker), for his part, was unable to say how many were now alive. He considered he had "had a rough time of it," and the stipendiary magistrate, perhaps agreeing, let hini^ff with a month's imprisonment.
