PARAPARA-RAETIHI ROAD.
* TO THE EDITOIt. Sib, — The letter which appeared in the columns of your local contemporary a few weeks ago, by Mr H, E. Ayes, anent the Parapara-Baetibi Road, has evidently hit some people who are interested in that road not being made. Your contemporary ' in a sub-leader commended the letter and - Mr Willis, M.H:K., whilst taking it as a ( personal attack, contended himself by saying that " a time would come" when he would prove that he knew more than Mr Ayes did about the matter. Now we have Mr Hatrick taking advantage of a palpable mistake in figures as to the cost of the said road, on the part of Mr McLarin, a settler. Why does Mr Hatrick do this ? He knows as well as anybody that the proposed road would not cost more than a little of the £50,000 he mentions. There must be some reason for Mr Hatrick ptetendin? that he J believes the road will cost .£50,000. Of I coiuse such a sum would make the work \ almost impracticable. Then again we have " Common Sense" writing implying i lunacy on the part of " the gentleman who wrote previously" on this matter. There is a striking similarity in "Common Sense's" letter and that of Mr A. Hatrick's, not only as regards style, but, curiously enough, as regards figures also. , I should say, sir, that the matter of a " road from the Parapara should bo left to the townspeople of Wanganui generally, and noither to Mr Hataick or anyone els 9 individually. Surely the Chamber of ' Commerce as a body ought to act in the matter, and if they think it likely to 1 benefit the town they should do their . best to get the work done, irrespective of '. Mr Hatrick or anybody else. — I am, &c, Obsebvjeb. Wanganui, November Ist, 1893.
