AN ANSWER TO THE POINT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,— The Herald has fallen very low when it heads a leading article "A Dastardly Lie." From such a terrible heading one would expect to find some dreadful mendacity exposed, but it Boemß (that all this wrath was provoked by an expression of opinion, rather than by any positive assertion which might be refuted. It is my opinion, and, I think I may safely say, the opinion of nine-tenths of the inhabitants of Wauganui, that the Herald did try to ruin the character of an innocent girl. For holding this opinion we are, according to the Herald, all " dastardly liars." Well, I would much rather that the Herald should hold that opinion of me, than that I should have dishonoured myself by reading and publishing private letters never meant for my eyes. Until it can satisfactorily explain such a direct violation of the usages of decent society, let it hold it's tongue. Calling other people liars will not excuse it. — I am, &c, OnXiOOKER.
