Stud Horses. I M TOUTED -FiiOM AUSTRALIA TO STAND THIS SEASON IN THE WANGANUI DISTRICT. >flt|3Bfe The Thoroughbred TWPpRw" SOU'WESTER, (By Qoldßbrough — Sea Breeze). It cannot but be acknowledged that Goldsborough is one of the very best horses that Australia ever produced, and his doughty deeds on the turf have been transmitted lo his descendants, notably, Sou'wester, whose performances throughout a long career were of the most.'txcellcnt description, as will be seen below. Sou'wester is n. beautiful dappled brown, standing fully sixteen hands high, with good legs and plenty of bone, measuring 8 inches below the knee. His sire Goldsborough is by Fireworks out of Sylvia, by Fisherman— Julist, by Touchstone, Sylvia is the dam of Martini-Henri, who is also making a great name for himsolf on the English and colonial turf. Sou'wester's dam Sea Breeze was by The Barb — mermaid, by Fisherman—Sweetheart, by Hedheart, her dam Molisina(imp) by Harkaway. The Barb's deeds will for ever live in the memory of all racing men, he being one of the stoutest and vainest horses foaled in Australia. The following are the performances of Sou'westor while he was on the turf : — Asa3-yoar-old, won the South Canterbury J . C. Handicap, 1 1 miles, in 2min 42 J sec, As a 4-year-old he started by running unplaced in the Geraldine R. O Handicap, won by Tasman. He was not seen out again till the D. J. C. Autumn Meeting for the Dunedin Cup, of whteh year Cutts thought he had a moral ; but Sou'wester, at the start, slipped into a ditch and lost 150 yards, and was thought to be hopelessly out of it. However, he stuck to hiswork, and by a desperate effort -got- up into third place, behind Lady Kmma and July, who finished first and second, the two miles and a distance being done in the fast time of 3min 56see. Latjr on in the same day ho was pulled out again, and won the Stewards' Purso Welt'r Handicap, in which he carried Bst 10) b, The following day ho was an even money favourite for the D. J. C. Hanicap, won by Lady Emma, the favourite finishing fourth. At Napiei, oASt. Patrick's Day, Sou'wester (Bjt 21b) won the Napier Handicap of 500 soys. bearing The Poet and Nelson (who ran a dead heat for second place), and seroral othprs. Later on the next day ho put up Bst 121 b, and | ran second to Leonora (Bst. 111 b), in the Tradesmen's Handicap, of 250 soys ' H miles, behind him being Mischief, W-nipiti' Ihe Poet, and other ,well know.ni.p^erformers.- Sou'wester started ats^tplfor the Great Autumn Handicap at Christchurch the following month, with Bst lib up, and finished fourth, a nose only dividing him and Lady Emma, after having cut out the running and held the lead until within a few lengths of the post, when Vanguard, Hippodaraia, and Lady Eminashotupand finished as namedjtimo, 2in lOJs. Behind Sou'wester were Tasman, Mischief, Salvage, lke, The Poet, Rubina, Makatu, Captain Webster, The Jilt, and Leodagron. He started with 7st 12lb up for tho Easter Handicap, won by Tasraan, the following day, but failed to get a place. The following week he journeyed to Timaru, and_ with 7st 2lb up ran second to lasmau in the Timaru Cup, and repeated the performance the following day in the J.C, Handicap, in which he defeated both Vanguard and Lady Emma. Reference to the l'urf Record shows that his Most brilliant performances were as a 5-year old. Ho won tho C.J.C. Metropolitan, beating Lady Emma, Leonora, Turquoise, Nelson and other well-known performers. His next win was the Free Handicap at the Auckland Summer Meeting when he carried Bst 121 b, On this occasion ho conceded 121bs to Minerva and Ist 21b to Administrator and won by a length. The r.ext time his namo was bracketed was at the South Canterbury Autumn Meeting, when ho placed the J.C. Handicap to his credit. The time was 2min 39sec, for tho mile and a half, which is the record of Martini-Henri forthe same distance. In this race he gave. 9ibs to Wapiti and 21bs to Lady Emma. At the Wellington R.C. Meeting ho was first past the post in the Autumn Handicaps carrying Bst 121 b. Ho beat Ascot (7st3lb), Clog 3 (7at 51b), Admiristiator (Bst 101 b), Speculation (Bst 61b), and several othor cracks. At the Dunedin Spring Meeting he came in in front of Ike and Nelson, and again at the A uckland Summer meeting he had behind him Administrator, Fish woman, and Witiora, to all of whom ho conepded substantial weight. At Wellington again he n n second to Administrator for tho Gold Cup, giving Gibs to the winnor, and beating Tigredia and Block Rose. In the We'.lington Cup he ran into third place, Taxman and Tigrodia being first and second respectively. The Dunediu J.C. Handicap found him occupying the . second place of honour, Tasinan being first. He headed Captain Webster, Lsdy Emma, July, and two others. His time will be found gcod all through, and fora quicker performer reference will have to be made to Australian records, for no better can be found in New Zealand sporting annals.' As a 6-year-old he did not gain a winning bracket, as his legs prevented him from being wound up properly.
