The steamer Penguin left hero, bound for Lyttolton, at^ 2.45 p.oi- yesterday, in the face of a heavy southerly gale, and ifc was thought by many that when passing Kaikoura this afternoon Bhe may have hoisted her number (V Q H T), in order to enable those on shore to report that she was all well, and thus allay any anxiety which may have been felt for hor eafety, she then being nearly twenty.f 3ur houra on the voyage. On the other hand, ther> are some who think that the heavy weather Bhe must have experienced has caused some mishap on board.
